Q: whats the best home security camera system available at the moment (reasonably priced)?
hi i am looking for a programmable home security camera system that will record on to hard drive, and will take between 4/8 cameras it must also contain a large hard drive for storage but 2 cameras will do for now & must be reasonably priced must have all attachments required to plug & play as i dont want to be robbed from add ons . thanks

A: I took a look at that camera and my concern is it is onlly 240 lines as well it is CMOS not CCD. Yes it is nice and cute and will probbaly work for general area surveillance but will not give you any usable detail. As for your actual question. The best way to go would be an embeded Linux based DVR. I really don't know all too much about the retail ones on th market as I tend to stay away from the consumer end garbage. For my customers, I like to use Capture as their software is nice and easy to use. They have several different units available, but I tend to use their 4 channel because it is less expensive to buy 2 - 4's vs 1 - 8 Channel and the software enables you to access mulitple units on one screen. Of course there are higher end units out there like Pelco and Panasonic and yes the quality in some of these can be better, however most people will not notice the difference and really don't need it. If you got anything out of the above rambling, it should be software is key. Well of course recording rate, compression, and image size is important as well. I would stay away from the retail units, and definately the package systems for under 1k. Camera's will be garbage and the recorder suspect. I have written an article on the basics of video surveillance, you can find it on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca. Protection101. Good Luck

Q: Can a home security camera that hooks up to RCA jacks be turned into a wireless device??
I recently bought a mini TV for use in my car and I want to somehow hook up a surveillance camera to the same TV, both being ran out of my car. Could that camera be converted to a wireless device???

A: Simple answer is yes. Conditional response is why? Do a yahoo or google search for "wireless composite video transmitter". You will find that they fall into 2 camps. 1. Big and Bulky but cheaper ($125). 2. Small and compact and more costly ($395) Other problems. Noise and interference. Could be a problem with certain cell phones depending on the frequency of the transmitter & signal strength. You won't know until you try it. Save yourself some time, installation headaches, money and have a Auto stereo shop/store wire up the cam for you. Cost you less than the transmitter.

Q: looking for security camera from home to home?
i have a home in georgia and one in pa is there any thing i can use to see my other home when im not there by using the net?what can i buy and where can i buy it . something simple and easy to set up

A: There are a couple of ways that this can be done. The easiest way would be to use what is known as an "IP camera." This is a CCTV camera with a built-in network adapter. You plug the IP camera into the internet. In a residential application, this would typically require a high-speed connection, such as DSL or cable. The IP camera is assigned its own IP address (such as 12.123.45.123). At the viewing end, you would need a standard personal computer with an internet connection. To view the camera, you use a standard web browser, and enter the IP address to connect to the camera. There is usually a log-on screen that requires you to enter a username and password before you can start viewing. Some IP camera manufacturers also have their own software for viewing that work like the web browser but offer additional features. So with the IP camera, you would need just the camera and an internet connection at the house, and just a standard PC with a network connection at the viewing location. With this arrangement, you could view the camera from anywhere in the world. A major manufacturer of IP cameras is: http://www.axis.com Your second choice would be to use what is known as a "remote video viewing system". This requires the use of a video transmission unit (VTU) and one or more standard CCTV cameras. You plug the cameras into the VTU, and then plug the VTU into a standard phone jack. If you have ISDN, that works best, but a regular telephone line works also. At the viewing end, you would need to have a standard PC that had a dial-up modem. You would need to install viewing software that came with the VTU on this PC. To view the camera, you simply launch the software and click a button. This establishes a connection with the VTU and the other end and allows you to view the camera. One manufacturer of remote viewing systems is: http://www.ozvision.com

Q: how do i hook up a home security camera to a laptop?

A: You would need something on the order of this, lets you convert composite video from a camera to your usb port http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5622092 You can also get just a basic "video to usb" adaptor if you just want to display and/or record the video without motion detection, search and other bells and whistles like the above adaptor has, See the usb capture devices, they have your standard yellow/red/white A/V jacks like a vcr, and plug into the usb port http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000380047%201685342852&name=Editing%20%26%20Capture

Q: How do I set up home security cameras that I can view over the web?
I travel a lot and work away from home a great deal. I would like to set up a security system that I can monitor from the internet. I will need 4 cameras and one will have to have be able to focus on objects 150' away. The other three cameras will have to be able to focus from 0 to 50'. Any information on the set up, cost and availability of the equipment would be appreciated.

A: You need an IP camera. They don't even require a computer to be on. Panasonic makes the best with pan/zoom for about $1000. Dlink has some cheapo ones for $100-$200. Be sure and enable security or the camera will be viewable by anyone on the web. Q: Home security camera?
I want to buy 1 camera, to place in a window that can view outside my house at night. I'd like to set it and forget it. I need it to record all of the time, and be able to access it when something is vandalized. I'm thinking some kind of DVR. Can anyone who currently uses a system like this let me know what they use, and if they like it. I've already looked at a number of internet sites, but they don't have product reviews.

A: My employers had this done right after the new year. I know its real. It has a red light that comes on when you get about 50 feet away. The local camera shop (Creve Coure Camera) installed it. I hope this helps. If no camera or security shop is nearby try this link; http://www.scdlink.com/results.cfm?category=13&secondary=26

i would like to set up a few camera in my home that record while i am away.. i do not need to get updates sent to my phone rather i would like to save the video recorded onto a hard drive.. what cameras would you suggest and software? thank you

A: wug, Nearly 2 years ago I had someone try to break into my condo. It was late at night and the lights were off, but I wasn't asleep yet. I heard a noise at the back door. I ran into the den and flipped on the outside lights. It startled the burgler and I saw him high tail it out of there. (I assume it was a him). I then called a couple burglar alarm service in my area and they all gave installation and monitoring quotes. I recommend you call a home securty installer to get your questions answered. http://www.homesecuritysystemratings.com Almost every alarm companies offer a free installation special, so ask about that too.

Q: Home security camera advice?
We are looking for a relatively inexpensive security camera for our house - not an "alarm system" just more of a camera to find out who has been at our house (someone has been at our house when we are not there; messing with landscaping, etc.). We don't know much at all about cameras or what we need - probably something that could record while we were gone (it always happens when we are not there)... any advice would be great. Thanks! I should add that the camera will be located on the front porch looking out at our driveway.

A: We have a for camera system that we set up for about $1000 but that was 3 years ago. Right now you can get a camera from Walmart for $25. You can record to a normal VCR or spend about $300 to get a time lapse vcr. If you need any help you can e-mail me at billyhart1@yahoo.com

Q: Can you recommend an inexpensive home security camera that activates when motion is detected?
We have had some trouble recently with someone messing with our cars while we are gone. We want to purchase an inexpensive home security camera, something we can set up outside. But it would have to be motion activated, and possibly be able to view in the dark. I don't know anything about security cameras, and in the process of trying to read up on them, I've just become more confused. We don't have a lot of money, so any inexpensive suggestions would be helpful. They would have to be wireless as well. I don't know how or what we would use to record the video...like I said...I don't know anything about security cameras...any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks

A: What you are asking for may actually require several different components. I have never seen any type of "kit" available off the shelve that will give you what you are asking for, but there could be one available. First, you will need a camera. If it is to be used outside, it needs to be weather-resistant. Cameras need light to operate, so if the area you want to view is not well-lit, then you will need a camera that has low-light capability and/or built-in infrared illuminators. Second, you will need something to record the images coming from the camera. This can either be a stand-alone digital video recorder (DVR), or can be done on your PC using a video capture card and some video recording software. Many DVR's and some video recording software has built-in motion detection capability. If the camera sees movement, then the system will start recording. You could also use an external motion detector to activate the recording. This would require the use of an outdoor motion detector in addition to the camera. The cheapest and most reliable way to connect these components would be with hard-wired cables. If you really must use wireless, then you will also need to buy a wireless video transmitter and receiver. Keep in mind that you will still need to get power to the camera anyway, so if you can cable the whole thing, this would be your best bet. This whole thing won't be inexpensive; I am guessing that you could spend $500 to $1,000 to get everything you need. There are tons of companies that sell security camera equipment on the web. Two of the larger companies are: http://www.supercircuits.com http://www.scdlink.com You may want to contact these companies, tell them what you want to do, and see what types of solutions that they offer.
