Q: Does light trigger the PIR sensor for a Yale home security alarm?
Hi there, I have a Yale home security system. If I was to set up some light switches that turn on and off automatically at certain times, whilst the alarm is armed, does the alarm PIR sensors pick up the light turning on all of a sudden out of darkness? Or do the sensors only detect movement in solid objects?

A: The light itself more then likely will not. But the heat of the light crossing with the "beams" could activate it. I've had one customer have a false motion alarm because they left their curtains open in their sunroom and the sun was shining directly on the detector. Here's an article to help understand how motions work. http://www.howstuffworks.com/burglar-alarm2.htm Anything that breaks the "beams" or "waves" can cause it to activate.

Q: Should I get a dog or home security alarm and why?

Q: If the transformers near my house cause an EMP will that disable my home security alarm?
Ive heard EMP's cause electronics to fry and i wondered if that meant it would fry my home security

A: An EMP (which do exist outside science fiction) is caused by a nuclear bomb, or sophisticated equipment like a low-inductance capacitor bank discharged into a single-loop antenna. The transformers near your house have about as much chance of making pancakes as they do of making an EMP, your alarms are safe.

Q: what is the best home security alarm?
What is the price to install and the price per month?

A: My suggestion would be to ask around locally. Try to find a company that is small enough to care but with enough track history to prove their ability. The average install rate for a full house is anywhere from 1200 upwards. Depening on the scope of protection, if you want smoke detectors, carbon monoxide, motion, glassbreak, number of keypads, number of contact, difficulty of installation etc. Window screens are a good idea, I haven't really seen them around for a number of years and I do remember there being the occasional issue with wire tears, they can be fairly delicate. Typically monitoring rates around here (Canada) tend to be around the $25 per month range. There are a few companies that will go lower to build up a sellable acount base but from customer feedback, their service tends to be fairly lacklustre. I have written a number of articles on security systems and home security in general, they can be found on my website at http://www.keepsafesystems.ca. Some articles of interest might be protection101, false alarm info and there is an article on the truth about wireless "security systems" in the archive. Wireless systems are definately something to avoid at all costs. a qualified alarm installer should be able to hardwire almost anything. Good Luck
