Q: Network security?
I am strongly considering this as a career choice. I know people going out of college doing this job making 100-120 thousand dollars a year. I am currently enrolled in a computer repair and networking class, i was just wondering what all it takes to get network security as a career (somewhat of an Anti-hacker, if you will)
A: It isn't a bad career. However The two classes you listed are not enough really. In addition, I'd take computer security classes and consider Novel, Microsoft and Cisco certification as well. Ideally, you should have a college degree in computer security.
Q: How to start a Network Security Business as a Certified Network Security Specialist?
Hello! Can anyone please help me with this question? Thanks! I am getting certified in Network Security from my school and should be finished within a month. I plan to start a Network Security Agency or Consultant Group. How would I go about this? Is there a large number of businesses willing to pay for an outsider to mess with their Networks Security? And what type of businesses should I start to market too? I have done searches on this through numerous search Engines, but nothing has come up. I appreciate your responses. Thank You all ahead of time!
A: It's totally obvious when a "consultant " walks in and has no real experience in their field, and I personally won't hire a consultant that doesn't have a reference list of similar projects completed.
You really need some real-world experience first: get a job in the IT field, after five years you could probably wrangle your way into network security, get at least five years in network security, and then you'll be in a viable position to try this.
As an aside: if you're thinking about consulting but don't know if what you want to do is possible, how to do it, if you have a market, or who that market is... that should tell you something important.
Q: How to be a security expert in network and data administration?
Hi.I wanted to know about the persons who are called security expert or working to protect the network or data from the hackers. What are the courses available to know all these about network security? What are the qualifications needed to work as a security expert in a company? Thanks to all for your important suggestions?
A: Probably the most widely-recognised security-related courses are given by the SANS institute (http://www.sans.org/). They are not for beginners, though: you'll need a solid grounding in network and operating system configuration and deployment.
Be prepared for disappointment if you try to get a job armed solely with qualifications. Experience is everything in this industry.
Q: How do I find my network security key?
I've been using my laptop on a wireless router based from my other computer. Apparently my laptop decided to forget the network security key, and I have no idea how to find out what it is. I'm not too familiar with wireless networks, so bear with me.
Thanks!
A: You need to open the router interface page to find the key. It will be an IP address such as 192.168.1.1 or something depending on what type of router you use. This addy can be found in your router manual. You put this number in your browser address bar and enter.
Q: I cant find the network security key for my Linksys wireless router. How do i reset it?
I had to reload the start disk on my computer and i need to find the network security key so I can finish setting up my wireless router. How can I reset the key?
A: If you can't access the web interface, then you can reset the router by holding down the reset button for 30 seconds.
If you *can* access the web interface (go to 192.168.1.1 in your web browser), then you should be able to change it in there. The username/password combination is probably admin/admin if you haven't changed it.
Q: How to become a network security specialist?
Should i go to college or get my certs (CEH, Security +) ? Should i go to a school like UAT that offers a academic program in network security and cost like 70,000 dollars(Way out of budget.) Go to a community college (Already going. Getting my degree in network administration(A.A.S) Or should i just get my certs? Which way is best for getting a job in that field?
A: The good thing about computer security is they are always in demand. So to answer your question is Yes yes and yes... CEH or certified ethical hacker is a joke. It is a crap class i have took it. However it still looks decent on a resume. The most prodominant certs to get in the security field is your CCNA and CISSP. These certs alone will get you many network security jobs. But start small with your A+, Network +, Security +, CEH, Certified Penetration Tester, and other white hat certs. The only other thing that will help you out is time under your belt. Get an internship at a local security firm or network secruity office. Anything to put time under your belt. With enough drive you will make it. But start small and work up to CISSP. That is the catch all certification....
Q: What does it take to become a network security expert?
I'd really like to get into network security, computer forensics and such. I have a light background in IT. I'm wondering what skill you need? Do you have to know how to code? Or is it more, that you have to know how things work?
I have 4 years of college :P
College doesn't really show you HOW to do thing. It just helps you learn concepts, and terminology.
A: You will need to know a fair amount of coding. You need to know how things work [in depth], and how to manipulate them. You will need to know some code, but only in relation to network traffic. You'll want to be good with certain functions of command prompt for Windows [ipconfig, ping, etc], maybe some PHP [usually only for web security], and have some experience with Linux and BASH. Most network security issues can be dealt with using automated scripts or settings, but if someone comes into your network using code, you're going to have to be better at whatever they're using.
Q: How do I create a network security key or passphrase for my 2Wire?
I have a 2Wire hooked up to my desktop. When I try to connect to the Internet with the wireless connection from my laptop, it is asking for a network security key or passphrase for the 2Wire. I tried the password I have for my 2Wire, but it's not working. Anyone know what I need to do?????
A: With 2wire, its easy to read the existing passkey. On the unit label there will be a 10 digit number in side of braces [ ]. This is NOT the same as the routers password! To connect you just enter that number on your computer wireless connector when it asks for it. On newer units this is a WPA connection so your wireless card / laptop needs to support WPA.
If you don't like that one you can make your own, connect with a wired comuter, log in and change the wireless security settings. You can switch to WEP (not very secure) if you computers don't support WPA -- but I would upgrade the computers and keep WPA encryption.

Have fun!
Q: How can I find a wireless network security key?
If my computer is already configured to connect to a secured wireless network, is there a way to figure out what the security key is?
I am trying to learn the security key for a secured network using Windows XP. My computer is already configured to connect to this network, I just want to figure out the security key. Can anybody give me specific details or instructions?
A: the only way you can get the key is to log on to the route/access point that is responsible for encrypting the data.
when you are in there you can go to the wireless or security settings and read them from there.
so basically ask the person who administers the network.. if you are meant to have the key they will give it to you... there is no point for you to get it any other way as any person with an ounce of sense will rotate the key to a new code on a regular basis.. not to mention Temporal Keys that do this automatically.
Q: Is outsourcing network security a big threat to security professionals?
How hard or easy is it to outsource security of companies? Is the future bright for this field? What are the major threats and opportunities for network/cyber security in companies?
A: Are you seriously asking me t do your homework for you???
Outsourcing security is crazy.
For a company to place their security in the hands of an outsider who probably does not even go through the same strenuous background checks that the companies own HR department would conduct is absurd.
There are plenty of consulting companies that do 3rd party security assessments and these are fine and necessary for what they do.. but they do not take the place of in-house security.
Also, network security is an incorrect term. networking professionals have nothing to do with security and should be a complete seperate department. networking people who deal with seting up IDS and VPN should never be confused with security professionals who perform risk assessments, ensure regulatory compliance, perform penetration tests, set policy and procedure, etc... the other is just a networking professional who hopefully knows how to secure a router.
The only threat to security professionals is the incorrect usage of the term network security.
do your own homework :P
Q: where can i find my wireless network security key to connect to my wireless internet connection?
it says wirless network security key is incorrect were can i find the right one on my hp laptop?
A: You would need to open the router interface page with your browser to find it on YOUR router. Read your router manual.
Q: What are the best network security courses?
I am working in a company as software engineer and network supporter, and I want to enhance my experience in network security .
Could you please tell me what is the best network security courses that might help me for my carrier and reach an expert level in network security filed
Thanks alot
A: I would take a Security (CCSP) or Service Provider (CCIP)
course from Cisco... especially since you already have experience with networking already.
Take a look though, if you think you're above that level, there's a specialization course they offer too. I'm adding the link to Cisco's course page, just so you can decide for yourself. Good luck!

Q: How do I find the network security key to connect to a wireless network?
I am trying to connect my laptop to my sister's wireless network (linksys) and it is asking for a network security key. Someone else set up the network and neither my sister nor my brother-in-law know what the password is. I tried to access the ip address (192.168.1.1) but it is asking for a logon name and password- again- don't have one. any help is appreciated. thanks
A: Hi,
this is easy just look at the back of your router and there will be a small hole, just push a pin into it for longer then 6 Sec's and Bingo your router will be reset back to factory settings again (NO WEP etc), hope this helps you, and don't forget to reset your WEP and MAC up again will you.
