Q: How Do I Set-Up a home network with security?
I already have a home network set up in my house, but it is unsecured and sometimes other people near us use it without our permission. Is there an easy way to setup my network so that you have to type in a password to use it. I have looked up different articles regarding this but most of them are over-complicated and don't help that much. My network doesn't have to be government-tight but i don't want some random person to be able to use my internet.
A: Type in one of the following. into a browser window.
192.168.2.1
192.168.1.1
192.168.1.0
The router config utilty will load.
Default login is either blank as is password or Admin for login and Admin for password..
Depending on your router you need to find the location of the password settings and change it to one you will remember.
Under Channel and SSID, in SSID box give your connection a unique name, Untick Broadcast SSID, Protected Mode should be On.
Again Apply Changes.
Then click Security, in Security Mode select WPA, WPA (PSK) or WPA 2, do not use WEP as it is too weak.
Encryption Technique set to AES
Pre-shared Key (PSK) is where you enter your password for other computers to connect to your network.
Make this different to your login password and tick Obscure PSK, Apply Changes
Click on Use as Access Point and select Disable, Apply Changes.
Click on MAC address filtering and enter the MAC address of each computer that will be allowed access to your network, Apply Changes.
WAN Ping Blocking, tick Block ICMP Ping, Apply Changes.
Then Logout.
For each computer that connects to your network they will need the network name (SSID) and password (Pre-shared Key (PSK)
Q: How do I ensure security on my home network?
I have 5 different PCs in my house, all connected wirelessly to my SMC router. What are some things I can do to ensure that no one nearby "hijacks" my wireless internet. And keep it relatively safe from hackers on the internet.
A: Here are some basic steps to harden your network:
1.Disable wireless access to your router's admin pages. Leave admin access for wired machines only. You don't have to keep one machine ON a wire, just leave a wire hanging from the router and connect to it when you need access to the admin pages. Note: this has no effect on wireless Web access, just router admin.
2.Turn off the SSID beacon (broadcasting). You're not running a WiFi hotspot; all your computers should know the network name.
3.Change the SSID (network name) from the factory default so hackers can’t guess it.
4.Turn on encryption: WEP (for 802.11B/G networks) or WPA (for pure 802.11G networks).
5.Change the router administrator password.
6.Reduce the number of DHCP (automatic IP addressing) addresses in the router to the number of computers you have and no more.
7. Restrict access to the router to only the MAC (Network Interface Card hardware addresses) you want.
Hope that helps.
Q: Windows Messenger is considered a security risk. Is there an alternative for a small home network?
Objective: To be able to send short messages to clients on small home network with minimal overhead and no security vulnerability to outside world (have DSL connection through a Router).
A: I think you've confused Windows Messenger with Windows Messaging Service. (Imagine!) I can't think of any risk from using Windows Messenger, but you should definitely have the service switched off.
Q: what are 5 steps for home network security ex dial-up/Broadband? thanks?
hi, Victor, no its not a homework this what I meant. i should correct myself it wireless home network

A: First get a provider broadband is the best choice
Second - buy a router -circut city , staples, best buy
Third - decide weather you want wire less or will be connecting using The RJ45 wire with connection to router and computer.
The attuneation of RJ45 cable is 50 feet if you need a cable longer than 50ft then you will need a repeater.
Reminder some laptops will connet automatically nothing needed. If you want wireless then you must buy a bluetooth adapter which plugs into a ubs port/or a wireless card compatible with the router.
4) Disc usually need to be installed in the computers.
5) Hitch phone jack /broadband modem to the router using RJ45 wire.
Hitch Rj45 wire to computers from router to compters if choosing this option or bluetooth recievers to usb outlets
on computers.
Reminder make sure network is safe from hackers by making sure your firewall is on at all times. There is antivirus software for the home user whis free at avast.com.
If you run into any snags or problems call tech which is offered by your provider.
Q: home wirless network security?
how do i setup a password on my wireless network so that only the two computers in the house can access it.
A: Grab your manual or use the online manual of your router by searching for its model number.
First, Look into setting a WEP key to give it a "password", once you have both computers online with the WEP key, then look into setting MAC address filtering on your router. Each wireless adapter in a computer has a unique MAC address. This will prevent any other computers to get on unless they get your mac address.
I should also note here, some may argue both methods here are unfortunately not fool proof but should stop the average Joe.
Q: How do I get Norton Internet Security to allow access to files across a home network?
I have NIS on my server at home and I can't get the other computers to have access to the files on it unless I disable the firewall. I have tried to add the computers to the allow list but nothing works.
A: Try runing the network wizard.
Q: How to use Norton Internet Security with a home network?
Information or links will do for me
A: I know links
Q: what is the best internet security suite to use for a home network?
A: Hardware:
Barracuda firewall
software:
Norton Internet Security
Q: What do i do to help the security of a small besiness or home Network?

http://freetutorials.name/Reference1/Network%20Tools.html.html
it has several programs to break into networks and several to prevent it. Also administrative tools. You need tp know both so you can test your network.
Either scroll down the page or use the onpage menu
hope this helps

Q: What security measures are reaslistically required for a home wireless network?
It's mainly just to stop people hijacking our broadband internet connection, we live on a main road so it's very unlikely that anyone will be snooping on the street from their car. One just never knows what the neighbours get up to behind their doors!
So let's have some details - WEP, passwords, etc. What's effective and what's not?
WEP is the only security protocol listed on my wireless router, but surely that's better than nothing?
A: I'd change the default password for your router settings so none of your neighbors change your settings.
WEP is easily cracked, but it easily stops most people (e.x. neighbors) from leeching.
I'd use WPA, solely because it's much easier to use an alphanumeric (Like, a sentence or word) key over most WEP routers (which have nonmemorable keys in 2 numbers, then : format, so like 2F:D5:7A (etc.))
In a city/apartment environment, encryption is a necessity. I'd use WPA: It'll encrypt your communications AND block your neighbors at the same time.
Disabling your SSID can be good to stop neighbors, but it's no serious block for someone who has a little knowhow. And I personally don't like MAC blocking, it's extremely easy to change your MAC address in Windows with numerous free tools, and it's needless hassle.
Hope this help!
Q: Is MAC address filtering adequate network security?
I don't know why, but after switching ISPs, my internet connection seems to grind to a halt intermittently on my Macbook Pro laptop. After I deactivated the WPA security mode, it went back to normal. When I tried setting up WEP encryption, I couldn't even connect to my (Belkin) router (it said password incorrect, when I entered the correct password. Now I have no security mode enabled and I am just using MAC address filtering with my laptop. Will this be an adequate security setup for my home network?
A: Short answer no, it is not adequate. You should use wpa, with the mac filtering, hide the ssid after you get it setup, change the channel it broadcasts on and also set then main username and password on the router also.
Try resetting your router to the default configuration by pressing and holding the little reset button on the router. Reset all the security settings. Also in your laptop. Delete the wireless connection you have now and make a new one. That should solve the problems you are having.
Q: How do I setup a new computer with an existing security-enabled home network?
I couldn't seem to configure my new computer to get an Internet connection like all the other computers in my home network. I already have the WEP key but it doesn't seem to work. My new computer runs on Vista, and the other computers at home that have Internet connection run on XP. I've looked on a few other websites and couldn't seem to find the solution specific to my problem. Any ideas you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
First of all, I would like to say thanks to all those who shared their thoughts and worked within the info that I provided earlier. For those who need to get additional info, the router for the home network is a Westell Model 2200. The new computer has a Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter. There is a 26-character alphanumeric code that I enter when I try to manually connect to the Internet (is that the WEP key?), but sometimes, when I try to make a connection, the system doesn't even ask me to enter this code.
A: I would have to say that you are not inputting the correct WEP key. Connect the computer to your router using a ethernet cable and log into your router to verify you have the correct WEP Key.
Since you have not elaberated past "Its not Working" thats about all the help I can give at this time.
Q: How can you add internet security to a wireless network for windows vista home basic?
what i want is to protect my wireless network so people like my neighbors cant view my computer files from their computers, or connect to my internet if they didnt have any.
A: Well without knowing the make and model of your router, you can find out by reading the manual or going to there web site and caheck for instructions there. There are more then one way to do it. If you like you can mail me anI will look into it and tell you what you need to do.
Q: I am looking to changethe password for my home wireless network. Its a WEP security network. how do i do this?
A: You can change the settings on your wireless router by connecting by LAN cable (not wirelessly) and running the installation CD that came with your router.
If your router supports WPA (better) or WPA2 (best) encryption, then use these instead of WEP. WEP is easy to hack.
Q: my laptop will only connect to my home network when there is no security encryption? Help?
A: Update the firmware on your router, then update the drivers and any attendant firmware for the wireless NIC on your PC. Make sure your wireless NIC supports the encryption in use on your router. Some of the older wireless NIC's do not support WPA.
I think there were some wireless related updates to XP that came out a while back. Not sure if service packs or automatic update take care of this. do a search at support.microsoft.com
Good Luck
