Q: How do i make my wireless network "security-enabled" and not "unsecured"?
I just set up a wireless network on my laptop. My wireless network is the only network listed as unsecured on a list of 8 other wireless networks. How do I enable security on my network too?

A: In your wireless router/access points configuration page you set the type of encryption to use on your network. You will need to either tell us what type of wireless router/ap you have, or read the manual to determine how to access the configuration for it and enable encryption. You will also need to enable encryption on your laptop as well after you have set it up in the router/ap.

Q: Where can I find in Linksys the button to enable security of my wireless network?
i was advised to open my Linksys program and click on the enable WEP to activate my wireless network security. I accessed it and couldn't find the button. Tried clicking on the other menus but still couldn't find it. Help!

A: WEP is such weak security, you really need to set up WPA. Call Linksys at 1-800-326-7114 and press the phone number for wireless. You'll get a tech who will talk you through setting up good security on your wireless network. And the last thing you do before you hang up is have them tell you how to stop broadcasting a signal. That way, anyone who wants to piggyback on your wireless can't find it.

Q: How do you make your wireless network security-enabled?
I have a DSL connection hooked to a Wireless Router. I need step-by-step instructions. I really don't know much about computers. I have already set up the connection, but now I want to make it security-enabled.

A: There are several things you should do to increase the security of your wireless network. 1) Disable the broadcast of the SSID. It's harder to find what isn't broadcasting to the world actively. 2) Enable SPI firewall. 3) Change the default Router SSID to something unique of your own choosing. 4) Change the Admin password. 5) Enable WPA2. If you can't use WPA2 then enable WPA. 6) Enable MAC address filtering. 7) Set the DHCP settings of your router to the number of IP addresses you need now. If you have one computer and an Xbox, you only need TWO IP addresses. 192.168.xxx.02 - 192.168.xxx.03 or 192.168.xxx.251 - 192.168.xxx.252 for example. 8) Disable remote administration. This will require a computer with an Ethernet cable directly to the router to change the settings. I use a P-touch to make a label for the wireless routers I set up. I put the WPA2 Pass phrase, the admin password, and the SSID on that label and affix it to the router. If you do this, don't cover the vent holes of the router with the label. Your router manual should have detailed instructions on how to enable or disable all of the features I mention here.

Q: How can I change my wireless network security settings?
Currently the settings are unsecured and I want to change to security-enabled. I do not have the instruction booklet any more. It was originally set up by a friend, plus I recently moved and no longer have the book.

A: get on the web to the mfgr's site and dwnload the booklet on specific instructions. do not use wep, it's broken; use WPA encryption (or better). go to the 'grc.com/security now' website and listen to the wav files that explain all this in an easy to understand chat with steve gibson and leo laporte. there are some 3-4 sessions of MUST hear topics about security.

Q: I have a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL router BEFSR41 V3. How do I enable the the wireless network security?
I tried several suggestions already and can't seem to find the menu to turn on the wireless security. I am accessing the Linkysys prog by entering 192.168.1.1. Somebody please help me!

A: under secuirty or wirless enable encryption, pick WPA-PKA and put in the key you want for the wireless signal, then in the network settings on your PC put in for encryption type WPA and put in the key..

Q: How do i make my wireless network security enabled? My neighbour keeps using mine!?
I have a belkin router and my provider is AOL, which makes it difficult to change settings as it took 2 hours for me to set up the network in the first place, i want to make sure i dont mess anything up.

A: Well, your wireless network settings is seperate from the router settings that connect you to AOL. To check your settings, go to the admin page of the router and check the security. What you need to remember is whatever settings you set on the router needs to be mirrored on your laptop. For example, if you setup the security on the router for your wireless as WPA+AES with a network key of "12345678", you need to check your laptop settings so that WPA with AES is being used and the network key is entered as 12345678. Make sense?

Q: How do you switch from Unsecured wireless network to Security-enabled wireless network?
I just hooked up an wireless router at my house but I can't figure out how to make it security enabled. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

A: The other answers are helpful, but for most people going into the router administrative page and making changes to the settings gets kind of scary and painful. Another option is to use software called Network Magic for wireless network security. You can download the software here - http://www.networkmagic.com/product/wireless-networking.php . Network Magic gives you an easy way to lock down your wireless network with just a click of a button. Full disclosure - I work for Pure Networks - who makes Network Magic - but you'll see if you search other forums and Google that Network Magic has helped a lot of people with this and other networking issues. Plus, there is a free trial version.

Q: can someone tell me how to setup wireless security network?
ok so ive been using my wireless network as unsecure, and i just wanna change it into secure now, i looked it up on google but didnt understand, can someone tell me how step by step, cuz im really slow, thx

A: did your router come with a CD? if so run that CD on all the computers you want to access the router, if not you may need to log into the router Type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 into internet explorer and it should bring you to a log in screen The default username is (for a linksys) Linksys, or admin and the defaul password is usually (for a linksys) admin if your router doesn't accept these usernames and passwords, or is not a linksys router you should go to this site, and look for your router http://www.routerpasswords.com/ when inside the router look for the wireless setting, and thenwhile in the wireless setting look for the security section, it should show an easy secure setting, and click, or choose that.......

Q: In Vista, how do you view the network security code for a wireless network you're currently connected to?
My roommate made the wireless network and lost the password for it. Obviously we're still fine for the time being but to avoid any future problems we were wondering the best way to find out what our password is. How do you login to the router?

A: Why doesn't your roommate login to the router and change the key on the router and change it on the laptops. Its much better solutions. Once you input in the wireless setup on the PC, its astricks it out, so you can not recover it. Find out what default gateway is on your router is. You can do this by going to a comand prompt the easiest way to do it is to click on start - all programs - accessories - and select command prompt. once you do that you will get a command prompt type IPCONFIG then hit enter key. scroll to the top till you see default gateway... type that address in your web browser you will get a login screen. most likely the user name is admin and password id admin or password. check with your roommate to see if had changed the password. have him do it since he was the one who set it up in the first place and he should be able to do this again.

Q: I want to set-up a wireless network security?
I have windows 2000, SBC Yahoo! DSL, and a Linksys router, Where and How can I set-up the wireless security? *I think I'll do the WEP

A: If you have ONLY one system with Windows 2000 ( DeskTop..???) , I don't think you will be using your Linksys router for anything. In any case..if your 1 windows 2000 is in a laptop...then this is what you do... I use netgear and not Linksys...but it's all the same. You LinkSys would have come with a CD. Connect your BroadBand connection to your router. To Admin this router...Install the Linksys CD software from your sytem... ( Ideally, the system you're administering your router from...must not be Wirelessly connected ) Connect to your Router...usually by some URL...say like http://192.168.0.1 ( there is a default url for Linksys ) Do the basic setup. Like SSID etc. No security restrictions yet. MAKE SURE YOU DISABLE "BROADCAST SSID" option, though. You don't want to know other people to know your SSID...Only You and whoever else going to be using your router should be aware of this SSID. To begin with, try going online, wirelessly, using your router's SSID. Make sure you're online by NOT some free wireless connection. You will be using the SSID you selected for your router, in your machine's setup thing. Once you know that's going thru' your router...then slowly start applying the different security options WEP, and other methods.

Q: How do I change my netgear wireless network properties network security key?

A: Open up your browser and go to 192.168.0.1

Q: how do I make my wireless network a security-enabled one?
right now im pretty sure anybody like neighbors can just connect to it. how can I make it security-enabled. im running windows vista.

A: You can go to the internet address of your router. The address is usually the ip address of the router. Refer to the instruction manual of your router for more info.

Q: How to set a password in a wireless network and security network?
I use D-Link DSL-2640T ,and how i did the settings? can WLAN LAN ...

A: Get out the manual and read it for specific "how to" instructions. We cannot reprint the manual here. Log onto the wireless access point via a wired connection. NEVER use a wireless connection to configure, change configuration of, or change firmware on a router or wireless access point. Go to the wireless section, select WPA or WPA2 configuration, enter a preshare key (password) and record the password as you will need it. Activate MAC address validation and load the MAC address of all permitted wireless devices in the validation list. Now go to the wireless port of all wireless devices and configure them to match the settings used in configuring the wireless access point. Record what you did; do not rush through; use a logical step by step approach and all will fall in place. The biggest error people make is not recording what they are doing and not remembering later.

Q: Security cameras that send a signal to our wireless network, that can display on our computers, do they exist?
We recently had a break in to our apartment. We want some security cameras for the house, but we aren't looking for anyhing high end. I have no experience in the security field, but I was thinking we'd build a medium quality computer, to be on our wireless network, and hoping there's wireless cameras out there, that can sent a signal to our wireless network, that all our computers could pick up and display. Anyone know where I can find them? I don't really know what to search for, I've tried "wireless security camera" "Wireless network security camera" Thanks in advance.

A: I don't know about wireless into your router but what you could do is get a video card with multiple inputs and hook a bunch wireless cams that have a base into the card. Check out the camera in my sources link. Only like 36 bucks a piece. Hope this helps. The second link is to a two camera pack that is wireless and receiver hooks into usb so need for video card with inputs!!!!
