A: I am using kaspersky internet security 7, it is good at detecting viruses, spyware, worms trojans and all sorts of malaware programs. norton is good also but it slows down your system. kaspersky will detect anything, and it will not affect your system's performance. good luck :) http://www.kaspersky.com

Q: What are some must-have software for a new desktop computer?
I want to know what software I should install first on my desktop. What are some must-have security programs, fun programs, & productive software. I prefer to just download free software such as Ad-Aware or Avast, but if anyone knows any software that every new PC needs, please let me know. 10 points to the person that can come up with the most useful list of programs!!

A: I'm assuming you have a windows machine: AVG Free (or Avast if you prefer) ZoneAlarm Free Ad-Aware Spybot S & D A Squared AVG Antiroot kit Startup CPL (from Mike Lin, excellent for controlling the crap that wants to start up) CCleaner Quintessential Player (an excellent free multimedia player) Mozilla Thunderbird (a better & safer email client than Outlook Express or Outlook) Mozilla Firefox Opera (using both Firefox & Opera will keep that IE junk from running & exposing your PC to malware) all these programs are free.

Q: Is there free or cheap lockout/public terminal security software out there?
I'm using a computer temporarily as a public access terminal (for an exhibition). Is there cheap or free software or ways to lock people out from the 'start' button and only have access to certain programs (or to certain icons I place on the desktop)? Thanks!

A: These things are handled by Windows with system policies. They're built in to the OS. You can download the Microsoft Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP from Microsoft. It has additional functionality, but I believe it will allow you to setup what you're looking for.

Q: How can I remove a program that won't uninstall due to a software conflict?
Every time my friend's computer boots up now (running Windows 98), a screen from Comcast appears stating that there's a conflict between her internet security software (Trend Micro PC Cillin 2006) & Comcast DSL. This conflict developed after an attempt to download Comcast's Desktop Dr. support tool, which didn't even fully install. Conflict is now affecting random features & buttons on some websites causing them not to respond and some pages not to load. In fact, I tried sending this question on her computer, but once I got to selecting a category I got no response & couldn't complete the process. Called Comcast & they suggested disabling the internet security; did that, but Desktop Dr. still would not uninstall. Called Trend Micro, but they only offer online support which did not cover this problem. Also told to contact mfr. of computer, but tech support is no longer available 'cause the computer is 5 yrs. old. What can I do to evict the offending program & restore order?

A: I would suggest JV16 software which is very efficient. Once installed goto the software tab and remove the programs you don't want anymore. I would even suggest removing PC Cillin and get the free antivirus Grisost AVG instead.

Q: Why is it that I can play this game on my laptop but no on my desktop?

Q: If I use remote desktop can I get around school internet security?
I plan to use remot desktop at school and i just wondered whether it would bypass the school's internet site blocking software

A: I know you don't want to hear this, but my advice is that you shouldn't even try because that is against the acceptable use policy at your school. They have sites blocked for safety and security reasons. They own the computers and the internet connection so they get to say how they're used. Trying to bypass their security is considered hacking and will get you banned from using any of their computers and probably even suspended or expelled. They can see and track everything you do so you WILL get caught. Not being able to use the computers at all would suck way worse than just using them to view allowed sites - wouldn't it? .

Q: Can I run a separate personal firewall on my PC laptop that shares a wireless connection w/ a Mac desktop?
The Mac is connected via ethernet cable, and the PC will be wireless. I have security software already installed on the Mac, but I want to run a separate security suite w/ antivirus, anti-spyware and two-way firewall on the PC. Will this cause any problems between the two computers?

A: Not really, what you are going to have to do on your firewall is allow (permit) the other computer access to that computer. For instance, if you are sharing files. All you have to do on your firewall is give access to that specific IP address that comes off the other computer.

Q: Other than Norton Internet Security 2008 software, what other program is there 2 stop severe pop up & spyware?
I have a 5 year old HP Pavilion a630n desktop and I just recently got internet acess on this computer. I was using fine for about 3 months and now all of a sudden I get a whole slew of pop-ups that I don't want to see or deal with. I got Norton Internet Security 2008 software package & still I get spyware & very adult oriented pop ups. I tried going through the Tools=> Internet Options=>Security Tab option to clean up & permanently REMOVE each pop up that my poor old computer gets inundated with. I don't use this computer to surf the adult oriented websites I blocked those features b4 I received any internet acess so I wouldn't encounter problems like this. I'm not sure what kind of software to buy pop up or spyware oriented b/c I'm not sure which one is going to eliminate this problem ALL TOGETHER. Each time I go into youtube to try and watch a video the link I click on gives me this you have a cookie/virus/pop up file that is infected, even though NAV program just repaired the prb

A: If you use the Firefox webbrowser you won't get as many popups and it's resistant to all that garbage that regularly infects Internet explorer. When you use firefox it's much better them msie. SO go to Mozilla.com or firefox.com and download firefox. you will like it much better. Edit: You can also use other browsers like Maxthon, Netscape 9 and opera...they all seem better equipt to deal with intrusions like this.

Q: What will run better on my Intel based Mac: Desktop Parallels or Boot Camp? Any major problems with both OS?
This weekend I was thinking of purchasing either Boot Camp or Desktop Parallels, so I can put Windows XP on my Intel Based Mac OS 10.4. Just wondering if anyone has came across any limitations with XP running on a Mac. Also, do you need special security software for the PC side of things, because XP is running on a Mac? Thanx for all your help!

A: Why don't you just buy a PC if you're so interested in Windows? Maybe it's because you're another one of those mac users who absolutely have no clue to what they're doing. What's wrong, is OS X not exactly what you wanted? There's a reason why you can have Windows on it, it's because OS X isn't good enough. I mean any smart mac users knows that running OS X is the reason why you buy a mac. Apple is so greedy, that they'll only sell OS X on macs, just so they can get a profit from selling software, and hardware at the same time. Good luck with using either of those apps. BTW: I've heard that Parallels is better than Boot Camp. If Apple is so perfect, why can't their Boot Camp out class a competitors? Probaly because they're not so perfect as you thought.
