I need to find a good, reliable, free program that acts as a security/privacy function when downloading p2p/filesharing. Please assist. Thanks!
A: its not gonna bite........you can find it on tucows.com or download.com....but you dont need any extra security software......its not all that malicouse and virus laden as people say. but if you want goto torrentscan.com and use bit torrents hide IP little program....its spiffy. Then download utorrent off one of those sites i listed and install........read about "port forwarding" (just google it) to optimize up your utorrent connection. download whatever security software you want now.....then install it and hope the "security software" didnt give you something nasty.........make sure to get some other progs:
daemon tool's (or poweriso, magiciso nething to mount a file
winrar
be prepared by having all your drivers handy in case you crash
Q: What is the best free security software?
i do not want trial software. i want those that i can keep.
A: If you are willing to pay for an Anti-Virus I would highly recommend NOD 32. It is very effective, low on resources, and has outstanding proactiv detection. This means it doesn't always rely on a "signature" from the company in order to detect threats. It is what I use and what many people in the malware removal community recommend.
http://www.eset.com/products/nod32.php
If you are looking for a free product, then I would recommend avast! 4 Home Edition.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people to help keep from getting infected again. As a note, all of the tools and utilities mentioned are either free or have free versions available:
A firewall is very important in protecting your computer from hackers, a great free one is Online Armor.
http://www.tallemu.com/product_overview.html
SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep malware from installing on your system.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
SpywareGuard - Works as a real-time Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - A very powerful on-demand scanner which searches and kills malware that infects your system.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
*****It is important to run only one of each type of protection program in resident mode at a time since conflicts can make them less effective. This would mean only one resident anti-virus, firewall and a real-time anti-spyware scanner. Programs like Spyware Blaster and MBAM do not conflict with any of these since they don't have a real time scanning engine that would conflict.*****
Q: what free security software should i have installed on my pc?
I already have Avast installed for viruses, what other software should i insatll for spyware, adware, etc?
A: 1. For your Anti-Virus.........................
I like the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.
Updates many times per day to detect new malware.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
2. For your Firewall......................
An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.
And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............
Pick and choose at least 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
Spybot Search and Destroy:

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
4. And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place...................
SpywareBlaster:

Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!

Q: where to find free security software such as spyware?

A: adaware, spybot search and destroy, spyware blaster are all free and very good, most software finds spyware where there is none just to scare you into paying for there product, the 3 i mentioned are very good
Q: whats the best and free security software for my laptop?
my computer keeps getting viruses and i need a program that will prevent tht from happening...and it has to be free...thanks.
A: For PC Security, you need more than just virus protection. If you're considering freeware security applications, you can choose from the following:
firewall: (listed in order of preference)
Comodo (http://www.comodo.com ), or
PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall )
Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that's very effective, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don't get improperly blocked. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.
antivirus: (listed in order of preference)
Avira (http://www.free-av.com )
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com )
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com )
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.
antispyware: (listed in order of preference)
Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com ) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com )
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org ) for additional removal ability.
Q: What are some free security software for college students' laptop?
A: A suitable freeware might even surpass or on par in performance compared to the available commercial software. Simple, Easy and Free
- Avira AntiVir Personal
- Ad-Aware 2008 Free
- Comodo Firewall PRO 3.0
- CCleaner
Q: Free internet security software?
I use AVG free internet security. Is this suitable to use alone or should I be using any other security ware alongside AVG such as to deal with rootkits. Does anyone know of any other free software I could use to give extra protection. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
A: There are two main things that you need to protect your PC, real-time Anti-Virus software and a two way firewall (inbound and outbound) you can get them both completely free, these two work well together on XP:
Comodo Pro (firewall)
http://www.download.com/Comodo-Firewall-Pro/3000-10435_4-10460704.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10849947
Avast Anti-Virus 4.8 Home Edition
http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?tag=pop.software&cdlPid=10852750
Tip: Install Avast then Comodo because Comodo can sometimes interfere with Avast's installation, I would recommend changing Avast's default skin for the Vista style skin available from their website - http://www.avast.com/eng/skins.html
Comodo comes top in leaktests
http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php
You should only browse the internet using a limited account not an administrative account, if a virus infects your computer and you are using an admin account it can make critical system changes, but a limited account does not have the power to make critical changes so the amount of damage a virus can do is limited.

Would also recommend that you use a safer browser like Mozilla Firefox 3, and download additional anti-spyware software my favourite is SuperAntispyware: http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware-Free-Edition/3000-8022_4-10523889.html?cdlPid=10850129
Firefox 3:
http://www.mozilla.com
You should Install the McAfee SiteAdvisor add-on - when you search for something using Yahoo, Google or MSN, site advisor displays either a green tick (safe site), yellow exclamation mark (use with care) or a red cross (dangerous site) next to every result. http://www.siteadvisor.com/
Q: What is the best free SECURITY software in each category to do with computer SECURITY?
A: FREE SECURITY GUIDE FOR XP AND VISTA:
There are two main things that you need to protect your PC, real-time antivirus software and a two way firewall (inbound and outbound) you can get them both completely free, these two work well together on XP and Vista (32 and 64 bit):
Avast Anti-Virus 4.8 Home Edition
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Comodo Pro (firewall)
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
Comodo Pro comes top in independent leaktests
http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php
Tip: Browse the net using a limited account rather then an administrative account, a limited account does not have the power to make system changes or install software therefore preventing a lot of malicious software from being installed in the first place.

Would also recommend that you use a safer browser like Mozilla Firefox 3, and download additional anti-spyware software my favourite is Superantispyware.
Superantispyware:

Q: Whats the best combination of free security software?
For anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall, cleaning&tweaking etc..
What about:
Avira AntiVir with
Spyware Terminator,
Comodo Firewall Pro,
Threatfire with
CCleaner&Advanced WindowCare V2
or is it too much?
A: You should also have a good anti-virus program to help protect your computer. AVG FREE is an excellent anti-virus program, which can be downloaded from www.download.com. You might also choose Avast or Avira, both also free programs from www.download.com.
Since NONE of the anti-spyware/anti-adware programs are 100% accurate in finding and removing spyware, you need at least two programs which you will run one after the other, not at the same time.
There are three excellent free ones:
--Spybot, Search and Destroy
--Ad-Aware
--Spyware Blaster
All are available FREE from www.download.com
You will need to download, install, update (and IMMUNIZE in Spybot) and run them, one at a time. Be careful with the NAME of these programs - there are "look-alikes" with very similar names, that are in fact spyware themselves! Reboot after you install each one!
After this current infection is cleared up, be sure to run both of the above programs at least once a week if you are on the internet frequently and/or like to download music or files.
NOTE: Some infections prevent your from downloading the above programs. You may have to use a clean computer to download the programs and copy them to a thumb drive or CD. Then transfer the install files to the infected computer and run.
--Occasionally you will not be able to run these programs without being in SAFE MODE. To get there, reboot your computer and tap the F8 key, repeatedly until a menu comes up. You want to choose SAFE MODE WITH NETWORKING.
You should also have a good firewall to help protect your computer. Zone Alarm makes a totally free version (watch you don't download the 30-day free trial of the paid version). You can download this from the manufacturer at www.zonelabs.com
Q: What are the best FREE security software packages for a new laptop?
Hello,
I'm getting my new laptop delivered tomorrow and want to protect it straight from the box by installing the necessary security software. I'm only looking for FREE software programs to do this. Having a quick look i have found that i need: firewall & anti-virus software packages. I have googled this and have found Comodo (Firewall) and AVG (anti-virus) as highly recommended on various websites. is there anything else i need to protect my new laptop from any security breaches? do i also need to install Online Armor on top of AVG and Comodo or does this do the same as Comodo. I have also found ZoneAlarm as another Firewall package, is this better than Comodo? Thanks in advance
What i'm looking for is suggestions on what packages i need to do the following: anti-virus, firewall, ad-ware, spyware, malware & startup 'cleaner'. From what i can gather AVG is going to be the anti-virus software that i use, now i need to know other programs for the other jobs/tasks
A: I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following linkhttp://www.computeractive.co.uk/. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
Q: How does free Security software such as AVG and AVAST compare to McAfee Security software?
A: I know a number of places that use the AVG and they seem to be OK with it. I used it at one time and was satisfied as well.
McAfee as well as Norton used to be good programs however the newer versions have been known to take over your computer and cause problems.
I was introduced to Mico World Technologies, inc about a year ago. I am very pleased with them and they are not expensive. I recently had a problem, caused by myself, and they worked with me until the problem was solved.
You can go to their web site below.
Q: What's the best free virus/security software?
I've tried downloading AVG several times now without success so was looking for an alternative to keep my laptop free of viruses, etc.
Alternatively, I would pay for a decent one but nothing too expensive!
A: If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):
1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection
2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface
3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It's cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update
I advise against Norton anti-virus, it's bloated software that slows your computer down. The best anti-virus available is Kaspersky or NOD32 (recent tests at av-comparatives.org).
